COLT MANUFACTURING - AT YOUR SERVICE
A major part of Colt's products are manufactured in the UK under the Quality Standard BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and the Environmental Standard BS EN ISO 14001:2004.
The aim of Colt Manufacturing is to achieve excellent levels of service, which is the result of successful outcomes in these critical dimensions:
Speed of response - Across the world, we aim to manufacture as close as possible to the customer in order to reduce lead times and increase flexibility of logistics.
Design flexibility and innovation - Our manufacturing engineering resource and R&D facilities enable us to develop unique or improved solutions where these are required.
Continuous improvement and quality - are achieved by various means described here, including optimised processes, supplier partnerships, investments in processes and facilities, and a people focus.
The set up of our Havant Caloris production line is one example of how we are striving for zero defects. Here we have installed a computer controlled refrigerant charging station which charges Caloris units to an accuracy of 0.2 grams. We also 100% test each of our Caloris units on final assembly, with each unit undergoing a computer controlled 45 minute test in a purpose built temperature controlled facility. (See the images below).
We make use of roll formers, which allows the manufacture of louvre from many different materials, including; aluminium, steel, stainless steel, copper, rheinzinc and pre-coated steel.
Optimised production processes - Cellular manufacture enables us to assemble, test and move the product one at a time rather than making lots of components, storing them, and then bringing them together.
Close relationships fostered with key suppliers - We operate just-in-time philosophies with our key suppliers as well as kanban systems for low value piece parts. We regularly review supplier performance and ensure that purchasing costs are as low as possible in order to maintain competitive prices for our products. We fully utilise an automated MRP computer system which manages all our business requirements and from a purchasing point of view is a very effective tool to manage stocks, demand, supplier orders, invoices and payments, and can also assess supplier performance and identify purchasing opportunities. We source globally where appropriate, and will team up with our other sites across the World to consolidate our demand and further improve our supplier leverage.
Investments in processes and facilities - There is a close integration of manufacturing, order processing and logistics to handle orders from receipt through to on-site delivery. This has brought the customer closer to the factory, and has given the manufacturing team a closer interface with the Selling Divisions.
A people focus - It is a well-worn management cliché that people are a company's biggest asset, but it also happens to be true. The only way to win in a ferociously competitive manufacturing industry, where the labour costs of foreign manufacturers are so much lower, is to nurture staff and provide a unique selling point through them. Colt is an Investor in People.
We engage our people in quality forums, with the aim of achieving year-on-year improvements in all areas of Manufacturing.
