The first smoke control system of its kind is being installed at Highcross / The Shires in Leicester. A variety of smoke control technologies are being employed, including car park and road tunnel ventilation, fire fighting shafts, and mechanical and natural smoke extraction. Colt has developed a new Extended Corridor Solution for means-of-escape corridors in residential
buildings. Compared with conventional Automated Opening Vent (AOV) corridors, this system offers

News - Full scale "live" hot smoke tests for car parks
Colt and the Building Research Establishment (BRE) have carried out a series of tests in a simulated car park
that successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of smoke control using impulse fans. They also found that the
conditions during the tests were very similar to those predicted by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
modelling approach as used by Colt for system design.
