Colt International's WRF (water refrigerant flow) air conditioning system, Colt Caloris, has been
installed in the impressive five-star hotel development, Luton Hoo. Just ten minutes from Luton Airport,
this Grade I listed stately home is being lovingly restored by Elite Hotels to provide 144 luxury rooms
in glorious 17th century surroundings. The Colt Caloris was chosen for its versatility and high performance,
necessary for a restoration project that requires sympathy for the magnificent building as well as the
ultimate in modern creature comforts.
Colt provided two separate Caloris systems, one for the Garden Wing and the other for the Orangery, which
comprise horizontal units of various sizes for each room, plus five external units. The Colt Caloris is
ideal for hotel applications as the system uses water to connect each unit, so only a small amount of
refrigerant is used. This negates the need for a costly refrigerant leak detection system and means
that the system is not affected by the requirements of the F-Gas Regulations. If required, the Caloris
system can easily be linked to a ground source heat pump at a later date.
For the guests, who will expect nothing but the best from this exclusive hotel, the units are highly
energy efficient with a very low noise level. Each room will be fitted with its own simplified controller,
ensuring occupants enjoy the ultimate in comfort. Colt Caloris is also much more adaptable than traditional
VRF (variable refrigerant flow) air conditioning systems, since each unit works independently. If there is
a problem, it can be localised, whereas unit failure with VRF can lead to a complete system fault.

Built in 1767 for the 3rd Earl of Bute, the house stands in more than 1,000 acres of listed parkland and
gardens, including an 18-hole golf course. Over the years, Luton Hoo has played host to many important
visitors, including Winston Churchill and the Queen. Luton Hoo is due to open its doors to guests in
autumn this year.
