Colt HOLLAND

Nic. Oud, Heerhugowaard, Holland

Nic. Oud BV is based in the town of Heerhugowaard, 50km North of Amsterdam. It is one of the largest direct mail companies in Holland, generating more than 120 million letters and mailshots every year.

The company outgrew its facilities and in July 2003 moved into a new building which covers 25,000m˛ and is fully equipped with heat pump technology and climate control both for the offices (Caloris) and the Distribution area (heat pumps). The Architect Paul Breddels, Heerhugowaard, chose and specified the Colt Caloris system. Eventually, Colt provided thirty-two Colt-Caloris units together with two external heat pump units.

Colt first installed a neutral temperature water loop consisting of uninsulated plastic pipework embedded into the concrete structure of the building which enables the system to use the thermal mass of the building to store energy.

Colt also provided two external heat pumps, the purpose of which are to maintain the optimum temperature in the water loop between 15°C and 30°C. However since the building's mass helps to maintain the water loop temperature, this heat pump is rarely in operation. For most of the year, the central heat pump will remain on stand-by.

The Colt-Caloris system provides decentralised control which allows occupants to regulate the temperatures of the individual rooms, and is designed to allow one area to be cooled whilst heating another.

This was the very first Caloris project in Holland. Nic. Oud chose the Caloris system because of its capacity for individual control of heating and cooling, the high level of comfort, and low energy costs.

Although being the first project in Holland, it has been very successful. It is regularly used as a positive reference site, as it has the longest record of usage.
