Smoke control systems are often provided in multi-storey apartment buildings, principally to assist escape in the event of a fire, which need to comply with the recommendations of Approved Document B.

In addition, buildings over 18m usually require a Firefighting Shaft, which also requires smoke ventilation. See also Pressurisation Systems.

Please refer to the leaflet Smoke Control in Apartments (3 MB) for details on the alternative design approaches.

If the corridor has an external wall, then a Corridor AOV (Automatic Opening Ventilator) or Corridor OV (Opening Ventilator) may be used.  Stairs are also required to have the protection of smoke control systems.

If there is no external wall, it is usual to introduce a single vertical smoke shaft through the building serving each level, with a natural ventilator (such as the Colt Stairwell Ventilator) at the top of the shaft. Smoke enters the shaft either through a smoke damper with a decorative grille, such as the Defender Smoke Damper, or through an actuated fire rated door, such as the Doorman.

Please click here for more information on alternative approaches to shaft ventilation, where Colt's recently developed Colt Shaft and Extended Corridor System are described.

In city centre developments, where space is a premium, many of these projects have an underground car park, which may also require smoke and day to day ventilation. Please also refer to Car Park Ventilation

Colt products are specifically designed to blend into the building structure, and where possible are concealed until needed. They are compliant with all relevant codes and standards.
