THE COLT SHAFT
The Colt shaft is a mechanical shaft system which provides equivalent performance to a BRE shaft for the ventilation of fire fighting lobbies. It can therefore be considered to the recommendations of Approved Document B and BS 5588-5:2004 for ventilation of fire fighting shafts.
The Colt Shaft, which is suitable for use in any fire-fighting core, requires a shaft of only 0.6m² compared with 3m² for the BRE shaft. This represents an 80 per cent reduction in the floor space required. It opens up the space on each floor, which allows architects to be more creative in their design, and improves the saleable or lettable space in commercial buildings for the client. This in turn increases the profits for developers and the income for landlords of commercial buildings, and permits more usable space.
Under design conditions with the lobby doors open the Colt Shaft provides a ventilation rate similar to the BRE shaft. When the lobby doors are closed the ventilation rate is automatically reduced to avoid excess depressurisation of the lobby.
The Colt shaft incorporates duty and standby variable speed extract fans with a Seefire duct termination, linked to a pressure sensor via the control panel.
The Colt Shaft design has been proven by extensive CFD analysis and by empirical tests. Please refer to the leaflet for further information about the tests that Colt has carried out.

Description
The Colt Shaft comprises:
- Duty and standby extract fans (3kW nominal) rated at 300°C for 2 hours
- Colt Seefire duct termination
- Colt Seefire stairwell ventilator
- Ducting to link builders work shaft (by others) to fans and duct termination
- (select) Motorised smoke damper and grille to each lobby (or) Doorman door actuator for each lobby (for a FD30 rated fire door provided by others)
- Main control panel plus mimic panel for fire service use
- Pressure sensor to each lobby
- (Optional) Fire detector to accommodation close to each lobby.
Builders work requirements
The builders work shaft is to be substantially straight, vertical and directly adjacent to the lobbies. The construction is to have a smooth internal face and minimum air leakage. The internal cross section is to be no less than 0.6m² and the aspect ratio no greater than 2:1. Where a fire door is used for connection to the lobby, the shaft is to be wide enough to accept a door of at least 655mm wide and deep enough to allow the door to open 30°. Where a fire door is used an open mesh grille is required in the shaft at each storey to prevent risk of falls down the shaft.
The fire door between the lobby and the accommodation will be fitted with smoke seals (FD30S rating).
Unless otherwise specified the ducting will be constructed from galvanised steel to DW144.
Please note that it is possible that the ducting is in a location that requires fire rated ducting.
