Colt Smokemaster Automatic Smoke Curtain
Description
Electrically operated automatic smoke curtain, to prevent the movement of smoke and heat from one area to another in a fire.
Approved Standards
The following standards apply to this product:
BS 7346: Part 3: 1990 Components for smoke and heat control systems
BS 476: Fire tests on building materials and structures
Part 6 : 1989 Method of test for fire propagation for products
Part 7: 1987 Surface spread of flame tests for materials
prEN 12101-1 (2003) Smoke and heat control systems, Part 1: Specifications for smoke barriers.
Product Performance
Complete product tested to prEN 12101-1 (2003) and BS 7346 Part 3, and achieved a rating of D30 (600 °C, 30 minutes).
Designed to operate for 2000 cycles at normal ambient temperatures in the range from 0ºC to 60ºC, and to withstand hot air and smoke at temperatures up to 600 ºC for 30 minutes once only.
The fabric has a Class 1 surface spread of flame when tested to BS 476:Part 7 and a fire propagation index I =2.7 when tested to BS 476:Part 6. It is therefore rated Class 0 to the UK Building Regulations.
General Description
Smokemaster comprises a flexible, heat resistant fabric wound round a circular tube. Inside the tube is an electric motor, which rotates the tube, via a gearbox, retracting the curtain and holding the curtain in its retracted position. A bottom bar is fixed to the lower edge of the fabric to assist in lowering the curtain, reduce movement of the fabric in air currents and provide a neat finish when retracted.
The motor/roller/fabric/bottom bar assembly is located in a rectangular casing, which provides protection for the curtain and acts as a fixing element to the building structure.
Fabric
The curtain material is a satin weave fibreglass fabric with a silver polyurethane coating on both sides. It is 0.4mm thick, and weighs approximately 490 g/m² in its finished form. The fabric is manufactured in widths of approximately 1.5m, so curtains of a drop of greater than 1.5m will have horizontal stitched seams at 1.5m centres, using Kevlar thread.
Bottom Bar Assembly
The bottom bar assembly is attached to the lower edge of the fabric, and acts to keep the fabric hanging vertical and taut when the curtain is in the lowered position, minimising deflection due to air currents.
The weight of the bottom bar is set at the factory, and is designed to meet the requirements of the various test standards. No weight adjustment is required on site.
Control System
The smoke curtains will be capable of operation as an integrated part of the Smoke Control and Fire Management System, with emergency power units and the facility to interface directly an OPV addressable control panel (if supplied).
The system shall be fully protected and fail-safe to avoid the need for fire rated cabling, with a 30 minute time delay to maintain units in the raised position in the event of a temporary interruption to the power supply. If power is not returned, units to power descend to down / default position after time delay.
OPV 2000 Control System (optional)
Panel LCD to provide "menu" driven control, with push button zonal FOP (Fireman's Override). FOP button per zone allows gravity drop curtains to be manually overridden, so curtains can be lowered, raised or left in automatic control. With drive up, drive down curtains with mid position you have the facility to, drive to mid position, drive to full drop or leave in automatic control. Each button also has position indication as above.
-
System diagnostics available are: zone control panel not responding, limits not reached fault (drive up, drive down curtains only) and UPS fault (if fitted).
-
Programmable via RS 232 link, and BMS compatible, to provide Automatic smoke control of Colt smoke curtains. As zones of smoke curtains drop, smoke reservoirs are created to control the movement of smoke within the structure.
-
Curtains are controlled via an Echelon network and local ZCPs (Zone Control Panels). These panels contain Colt CSIO (Colt Standard Input/Output) units, which allow each zone of smoke curtains to be addressable and communicate directly with the main OPV control panel.
-
Re-programmable, to accommodate future revised or additional control zones.
-
A fire maintained, 240V / 1Ph / 50Hz electrical power supply is required for the OPV control panel and locally at each ZCP. If a fire maintained supply is not available then an UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), is recommended.
-
OPV panel includes an integrated battery back up with continuous trickle charge and capacity monitoring. This battery back up will maintain the operation of the intelligent operating system if the supply to OPV panel should fail.
