Solarfin external solar shading system - aluminium louvres

A Colt Solarfin aluminium louvers solar shading system can reduce solar heat gain, lower air conditioning running costs, and lessen glare whilst maximising the use of natural daylight.

Solarfin is well suited to many different applications, from façades to glazed roofs. Such a louvre system consists of extruded aluminium profiles and can be either fixed or moveable, and positioned either horizontally or vertically.

Many options

Solarfin comprises a series of extruded aluminium louvres mounted into a support frame. The louvres may be fixed at any angle and can rotate under motorised control within a range of up to 120º. With 8 standard profiles, louvres are available as one-piece extrusions in widths up to 400mm and as multiple clipped together extrusions in widths up to 1050mm.

Spans can be up to 6m without intermediate support and up to 10m with intermediate bracing rods. Fabricated and perforated fins are also available.

Colt has a wide range of standard profiles but bespoke profiles and designs can be developed on larger projects.

Solarfin is available either mill aluminium, polyester powder coated to a RAL colour or anodised. See the specification page for further details.

Robust design

The hollow sections of the louvres optimise their weight to strength ratios. All components including the supporting construction are manufactured from extruded aluminium alloy with stainless steel fixings.

Sitework

Solarfin can be provided in modular pre-assembled form to reduce time on site.

Controllable versus fixed fins and control routines

A fixed solar shading system may only truly be effective on a south facing building.

Controllable solar shading systems can better optimise the flows of heat and light energy than fixed solar shading systems. Since the louvres are designed to follow the path of the sun, daylight levels may be optimised whilst radiation levels are reduced to a minimum. The likelihood of over-shading or under-shading that frequently occurs with fixed solar shading is reduced, since the louvres are always set to optimum shading angle.

On dull days, light sensors can operate to fully open the fins to allow the occupants full vision to the outside at all times.

An additional benefit is that when they are closed, moveable Solarfin louvres can provide additional security and can help reduce winter heat loss.

Controllable Solarfin louvres can pivot through 120 degrees and can be controlled by astronomical data operating the actuators to track the path of the sun.

Colt ICS 4-Link or Soltronic are the standard controls for Solarfin. These provide accurate control of the louvre blades, continually calculating the position of the sun and together with internal temperature and lighting sensors controlling the position of the louvres. Remote operation is also available via an internal modem interface.
