Extensive natural ventilation and smoke control solution

Ocean Terminal is a new shopping and leisure complex on Edinburgh's waterfront at Leith, Edinburgh. It comprises a dual level shopping centre with 165 shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and a 10 screen multiplex cinema. Ocean Terminal is at the very heart of the dynamic regeneration of Edinburgh's waterfront. It is also home to one of the country's most popular tourist attractions, the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Colt worked closely with Curona Design and Keppie Design over a three year period on the design of a comprehensive smoke control system. The system was split into a number of mechanical and naturally ventilated smoke zones, and the scheme comprises natural smoke ventilation and smoke containment systems in the form of drop-down smoke curtains.

Colt supplied Seefire natural louvred ventilators and Kameleon glazed natural ventilators to the stairwells and malls, as well as Smokemaster automatic drop smoke curtains. All of the equipment is controlled by an OPV 2000 system which is also designed and manufactured by Colt.

In the event of a fire the fire detection system pinpoints in which zone the fire is and determines a suitable response, opening the ventilators in that zone for smoke extract, and ventilators in other zones for replacement air. In the meantime smoke curtains drop to create smoke compartments, thereby maintaining a buoyant layer of smoke and preventing it from escaping into adjacent areas.
