Addison Wesley Longman Limited is an international publishing company located in Harlow. In the late 1980s it decided that its existing accommodation was inadequate and was hindering its potential development. It embarked on a feasibility study in 1988 to review possible solutions and C D Partnership was appointed to help carry out the study. The initial design brief was minimal and staff were consulted about the specification for new offices.

The Civil Aviation Authority, Swanwick

The Civil Aviation Authority chose Swanwick in Hampshire as the location for its £350 million air traffic control centre. The complex was designed by the Manchester office of the architects Building Design Partnership, and completed by Bovis Construction.

Campeon/Infineon, Munich

In modern architecture the facade is both a focus of attention and a company's sign-board. Infineon, the famous manufacturer of electronic semi-conductors and communication solutions joined forces with Colt International to design the envelope for its new corporate head-quarters in Munich-Neubiberg. The buildings, which face all the directions of the compass, incorporate a slatted and shuttered facade which ensures their appearance is unmistakable.

Born out of a vision in the boom years of the late eighties, Canary Wharf was London's most ambitious commercial development. It opened in recession-hit 1991 when the first tenants moved into the 50-storey tower, designed by US architect Cesar Pelli and completed by Olympia and York.

In the 1920s the Potsdamer Platz was one of the busiest squares in Europe with up to 100,000 people and 20,000 cars using the Square every day. Four fifths of the square was destroyed during the Second World War, and then the division of Germany and the building of the Berlin Wall turned the Potsdamer Platz into a no-man's land. But now the district is thriving again.

Digital Equipment Corporation, Switzerland

Colt first introduced the Shadovoltaic Wing concept at the 11th European Photovoltaic Conference in Montreux. Within twelve months Colt had turned this exciting concept into an installed system. Contact was made with Geneva-based architects Lecouturier-Caduff who had been handling the renovation of an office building belonging to the Digital Equipment Corporation in Geneva. The open inner court, with a plan area of 300m², was to be covered with a self-supporting steel and glass pyramid.

Dun & Bradstreet, High Wycombe

Colt provided Universal Louvre at Dun & Bradstreet's European Headquarters open two-storey car park.

The two levels of the car park had different requirements. The top level was more exposed to view from the motorway and was required to blend in with the windows above whereas the lower level had critical ventilation levels which had to be maintained.

Colt installed a Shadovoltaic solar shading system here that also generates photovoltaic electric power. The system consists of an array of 351 translucent photovoltaic cells attached to movable louvres.

Feat, Lugano, Switzerland

Colt provided 40 m² of movable monocrystalline photovoltaic louvres at this hotel training centre. Each louvre tracks the position of the sun and is controlled autonomously by a Girasol thermohydraulic sun tracking device. The installation of PV cells produces a power output of 3.8 kWp.

Health and Safety Executive

Health and Safety Executive, Liverpool

The building consists of a "street" consisting of a 144m- long glazed atrium, which connects two "finger buildings" as well as a circular "Drum Building".

The client wanted not only a comfortable internal environment, but also to demonstrate green credentials. Working closely with Kajima, and the client's architect, Colt undertook to provide a large part of the metal and glass roof level works, to fulfil a contract worth over £3m.

The new 4,000 square metre headquarters of the telecommunications company Ionica was designed by Cambridge based architects R H Partnership, and completed by Wates Construction. The building is located in the City's St Johns Innovation Park which is owned by the college of the same name. Colt Louvre was chosen to provide plant protection and solar shading.

After examining previous work completed by Colt on the MMC project in Hamburg which used the same design principles, the architect awarded the contract to Colt to supply glass louvre to the atrium in the District Savings Bank Harburg - Buchholz branch.

Leicester County Court's new purpose-built building required vast amounts of natural daylight to lighten the dark galleries. Colt installed Braat glass rooflights and Colt Cosmotron polycarbonate barrelled vault rooflights between two buildings.
