John Barnfield Eur Ing, BSc, CEng, MIChemE, MIFireE is a Director of Tenos Fire Safety Engineering Consultants.

Since graduating as a chemical engineer, John has worked continuously in the field of fire safety engineering. He worked initially for the Fire Technology Group of the Greater London Council, where he provided technical support to the London Fire Brigade and District Surveyors.

John then moved into the private sector and headed a fire safety consultancy team before founding Tenos Fire Safety Engineering in 1996.

John has been responsible for the fire engineering design of a wide range of buildings, both in the UK and overseas. These include sports stadia, hospitals, shopping centres, Bahrain's World Trade Centre and the worlds tallest hotel, Dubai's landmark Burj Al Arab.

In addition to design consultancy work, John has been involved in the preparation of various British Standards including BS 7974 (Fire Safety Engineering), BS 5588: Part 7 (Atrium Buildings) and CIBSE Guide E.

Paul Compton BSc, MBA, C Eng, MCIBSE, MASHRAE is Technical Director at Colt. He has worked in the building industry for about 30 years, with 25 of those spent at Colt.

Paul has extensive experience in the design, application and performance of smoke control systems. He is an active long term member of British (BSI), European (CEN) and American (NFPA) smoke control standards committees.

Paul has been a member of CIBSE for about 20 years and served on the CIBSE Publications Committee for many years. He was also chairman of the task groups that produced the recent CIBSE Guides C and B1.

Ian Doncaster BTech (Hons) MPhil MBA CEng MIMechE
is Chief Designer at Colt. He has 25 years experience of design, development, project management and manufacturing in building services and mechanical engineering.

Ian has extensive experience in the design, application and performance of smoke control systems. He is currently working on product development for the next generation of shaft systems and developing car park monitoring to enable efficient operation of installations.

Miller Hannah graduated in 1991 from the University of Strathclyde with a BEng (Hons) in Building Design Engineering. He went to work for Warrington Fire Research Consultants on a new British Standard for Fire Engineering. This is now published as "BS 7974: Application of fire safety engineering principles to the design of buildings." Miller put these principles into practice via several consultancy projects including Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Manchester United North Stand, Midsummer Place in Milton Keynes, Docklands Campus, University of East London and regional distribution centres for Argos and Tesco.

Miller then worked at Tenos Fire Safety Engineering before joining Hoare Lea in 2000 to establish the Fire Engineering Group. The group focuses exclusively on fire engineering and uses modern computational techniques to examine smoke development, people movement and structural response in fires. Employing 15 fire engineers, the group has completed projects for the UK's leading developers and clients. These include a 750,000 ft² office for Hammerson in Spitalfields, Bank of America's Headquarters in Canary Wharf and Accenture's headquarters in Southwark.

Hoare Lea is a major player in the residential sector and has worked on over 200 projects including Pan Peninsula in London's Docklands. When completed this will be the tallest residential building in Europe.

Miller is currently working on the ExCel Exhibition Centre, London; Woodwharf Masterplan for Canary Wharf and Ballymore; Broadmead Retail Centre, Bristol; and the British Army Headquarters in Andover.
