Gateshead Energy Centre

Part of the acclaimed Gateshead District Energy Scheme, the Gateshead Energy Centre is a beacon of innovation

Part of the acclaimed Gateshead District Energy Scheme, the Gateshead Energy Centre is a beacon of innovation, dedicated to supplying Gateshead town centre with affordable, environmentally friendly energy. Recognised for its visionary approach, the scheme earned the prestigious Visionary Project Award from the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), presented to the Gateshead Council.

Housing cutting-edge infrastructure, the energy centre boasts 4MW of combined heat and power engines, ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy supply for the town centre. To meet the facility's unique requirements, a significant emphasis was placed on natural ventilation airflow, a challenge addressed through the installation of Colt double bank 2UL/DH louvres.

The carefully selected louvres, painted in grey, perfectly contrast with the adjacent cladding in pink to make a bold statement, whilst serving a dual purpose. Beyond their aesthetic role, these louvres are crucial in providing both ample ventilation and weathering resilience to the structure.

The pink 2UL/DH louvre panel is a standout feature at the energy centre and serves as the main focal point. This panel includes a 'hidden' double door and integrates glazed window panels, offering a glimpse into the internal workings of the building. Positioned strategically, this design element allows passing train passengers a unique opportunity to witness the operational intricacies of the energy centre, enhancing public awareness and appreciation for sustainable energy solutions.
