Colt CoolShaft: providing smoke ventilation and corridor cooling

Colt CoolShaft is a combined smoke and climate control ventilation shaft system which cleverly uses evaporative cooling technology to provide active pre-cooling of the incoming air, without compromising the ability of the shaft system to ventilate the common area in a fire – and this with exceptionally low energy consumption

Case study

We recently carried out CFD modelling of the conditions in a corridor of a multi-storey residential building.

This corridor has a low temperature hot water pipework system shown as the heat source in yellow, which is situated above a false ceiling.

Supply air is provided by mechanical plant in the roof plant room, connected to the smoke extract shaft. Air is delivered to each corridor via a small day to day damper at low level in the shaft (below the smoke dampers).

Air is exhausted at each corridor level via a small day to day damper within the ceiling void and then extracted by mechanical plant at the head of the stairwell.

With no ventilation, the predicted temperatures in the corridor at 1.8m above FFL will be at an average of 31C at average summer time temperatures

With simple ventilation, the predicted temperatures in the corridor at 1.8m above FFL will be at an average of 29C at average summer time temperatures.

With CoolShaft, the predicted temperatures in the corridor at 1.8m above FFL will be at an average of 23C at average summer time temperatures.
